| If you have ever visited Benders Farm on Minor Road, you probably remember it for the beautiful flowers, fresh vegetables, pumpkins and the amazing sweet corn.
What you may not know is the rich agricultural heritage behind these products and these people. |
(Julia: 5/20/20 - 4/18/06) | The Benders have a long history of farming. In the early 1900’s, the Benders owned land on Cleveland Massillon Road in Copley that was then called the Bender family farm.
This farm was also a location of a farmer's market where many Benders sold their produce.
In 1955, Addie and Julia Bender started their own farm on Minor Road. The farm’s main focus was home grown vegetables.
They would sell their produce to Acme Click and to Beavers Street in Akron, along with selling it in the original market.
In 1971, after Addie passed away, Julia Bender built a market on what is today, Bender’s farm. |
| The market was the sole income for Julia for the rest of her life.
In 1982, her son Mark bought the farm and continued to farm alongside Julia. Julia has recently passed away and Mark continues to keep tradition alive.
Bender’s farm is successful by growing flowers, vegetable plants, green beans, strawberries, tomatoes, squash, zucchini, sweet corn, pumpkins, gourds,
Indian corn and other various items. |
| While their business constantly changes, the roots of their success continue to lie in their rich agricultural heritage. |
